Senior System Safety Engineer

We are looking for a highly skilled Senior System Safety Engineer to take the lead in ensuring the safety and reliability of innovative naval systems. In this role, you will be responsible for driving safety initiatives, implementing risk mitigation strategies, and ensuring compliance with international safety standards. As a Senior System Safety Engineer, your main tasks will include:

• Leading the system safety engineering team and integrating safety processes into standard operations.

• Conducting hazard analyses such as HAZOP, FTA, and FMEA to proactively identify risks in naval systems.

• Ensuring compliance with international safety standards, including IEC 61508 and MIL-Std-882E.

• Developing and implementing effective risk mitigation strategies to enhance system safety.

• Maintaining structured and traceable hazard documentation, utilizing an established risk matrix.

• Collaborating with engineering teams to seamlessly integrate safety requirements into system designs.

• Defining and documenting comprehensive system safety requirements for naval vessels.

• Acting as the primary contact for system safety matters, both internally and externally.

• Promoting a strong safety culture through training, awareness programs, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

• Providing mentorship and coaching to team members while contributing to performance appraisals and professional development.

• Driving continuous improvement by refining safety processes within the department.

• Ensuring strict adherence to HSSEQ / IMED policies and procedures.

To be successful in this role, you should have:

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant technical field.

• Extensive experience in system safety engineering, ideally within shipbuilding or naval defense.

• Strong expertise in safety analysis methodologies and standards such as IEC 61508, MIL-Std-882E, and the Machine Directive.

• Proven leadership experience in managing high-performing teams.

• A solid understanding of mechanical, electrical, and automation systems engineering.

• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

• Proficiency in MS Office and Requirements Management Tools.

• Fluency in Dutch and English; German language skills are a plus.

• Excellent references, as security screening is a mandatory part of the hiring process.
