We are seeking a System Safety Engineer to lead and oversee safety initiatives within complex technical projects. The role focuses on ensuring compliance with high-level safety standards and integrating risk management practices throughout engineering and operational activities. This is a hands-on position suited for candidates with a solid background in safety engineering and a collaborative approach.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct hazard and risk analyses, including methods such as HAZOP, FTA, and FMEA, to proactively identify potential system issues.

  • Ensure that all activities comply with relevant international safety and engineering standards.

  • Develop and implement strategies to mitigate risks and improve overall system safety.

  • Maintain structured and traceable hazard documentation, using established risk assessment frameworks.

  • Collaborate with engineering teams to embed safety requirements into system designs and operations.

  • Define, document, and monitor comprehensive system safety requirements for complex projects.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for system safety matters for both internal teams and external partners.

  • Promote safety awareness through training, guidance, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

  • Lead the safety engineering team, integrating safety processes into standard workflows.

  • Provide coaching and mentorship to team members and support their professional development.

  • Drive continuous improvement in safety practices, procedures, and tools.

  • Ensure adherence to all internal health, safety, environment, and quality policies.

Candidate Profile

Candidates should possess:

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant technical discipline.

  • Extensive experience in system safety engineering, preferably in high-complexity environments such as shipbuilding, defence, or industrial automation.

  • Proficiency in system safety analysis techniques and familiarity with standards such as IEC 61508, MIL-Std-882E, and equivalent directives.

  • Proven leadership experience in managing high-performing teams.

  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and automation systems.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

  • Proficiency in MS Office and requirements management tools.

  • Fluency in English and Dutch; knowledge of German is an advantage.

  • Strong professional references and ability to undergo security screening.

  • Exclusive EU citizenship with a valid EU passport (candidates with visas, dual nationality, or non-EU status cannot be considered due to project security requirements).
